The Backland UL (Ultra Light) series are Atomic's lightest ski touring skis, built for travelling as fast and as far as possible in the backcountry.
There are three models, the Backland 65 UL, Backland 78 UL and Backland 85 UL and these skis showcase Atomic's ability to create cutting edge ultralight skis that offer minimum weight, skiability plus reliability in the backcountry.
While the 65 UL is an out-and-out skimo race ski and the 78 UL a minimalist model for gram counting tourers, the Backland 85 UL has a very useable 117-85-105.5 mm shape yet weighs only 980g per ski  (both 172 cm).
We've been fans of Atomic's Backland series for many years with the regular Backland 85 being one of our favourite "efficient category" touring skis. The Backland 85 UL offers similar performance for gram counting tourers wanting faster ascents or a lightweight tool for going as far as possible. 

For 2023 Atomic have given the Backland 85 UL new lengths and subtle updates to make sure you keep ahead of the pack.
The Backland 85 UL is built with Atomic's All Mountain Rocker design with moderate tip rocker for easy turn initiation, camber underfoot for grip in hard snow conditions, and flat tail for stable transitions in tricky snow.
The Ultra Light Woodcore keeps it super light for super-fast skinning and the wider body (for an ultralight ski !!) with carbon construction provides reliable performance and stability on the descent. 
Atomic's HRZN Tech Tips allow the ski to float better in fresh snow and ski through chop and crud with more pose and stability than traditionally shaped tips.

While not cheap for an "efficient category" touring ski, you are getting what you pay for here. The Backland 85 UL has an excellent pedigree and the 2024 model is the latest and best iteration of a very successful ski.

Rocker / Camber:
All Mountain Rocker: 15% tip rocker, 85% camber, flat tail.
Core:
Atomic's Ultralight Woodcore uses caruba and poplar to make a light ski with a snappy flex.
Laminates:
Atomic's Carbon Backbone is an ultralight carbon spine that extends the length of the ski to provide support and stability.
Carbon fibreglass laminates give torsional rigidity for reliable control in all snow conditions.
Tip:
Atomic's sculpted HRZN Tech Tips add 10% more surface area to the tips, giving improved tip float for the same ski width as well as reduced tip deflection and improved tracking in variable snow conditions.
Sidewalls:
Atomic's Dura Cap Sidewall combines a vertical sidewall for power transmission combined with a small cap for durability.
