Ski Touring Gear List

A list of what's essential when touring is always useful. It's so easy to leave something at home or in the car, so best to have a quick check list of what's required for a successful and safe trip, whether you're heading out for a quick morning circuit or a longer trip.

GEAR LIST

Skis
Skins
Ski crampons
Boots
Poles

Transceiver
Probe
Shovel
Lightweight survival blanket
Navigation gear - map & phone app
1st Aid Kit
Multitool / knife
Skin Wax
Duct tape - wrap some around a ski pole.

Backpack
Ski helmet
Goggles, sunglasses
Two pairs gloves
Suncream
Food and / or energy bars

Clothing:
Depending on weather and temperature:
Base layer top*
Base layer leggings
Mid layer
Soft shell jacket
Snow/waterproof jacket and trousers
Warm hat
Neck tube / Buff
Ski touring socks

* If you sweat a lot it’s well worth bringing a spare base layer top and changing to this at the top. You’ll stay a lot warmer than wearing a wet top, the chilly 15 seconds while you change are well worth it.

Other gear to consider depending upon terrain, snow/ice conditions and timing:
Headlamp
Ski wax
Axe
Crampons
Skins - 2nd pair for longer multiday trips.

It's quite a list, but many of the items are small and light so your pack can still remain compact and comfortable. Some items such as an axe may not be necessary for your route. Even moderate slopes can be difficult in icy conditions, so it's best to always carry a lightweight pair of boot crampons as well as ski crampons.

GLACIER TRAVEL EQUIPMENT
Rope -  a lightweight rope for glacier travel
Harness.

CREVASSE RESCUE GEAR
Pulley System
Prusik Cord
Carabiners
Ice Screws

CAMPING GEAR
Sleeping bag
Sleeping mat
Goretex bivy bag
Cooking gear
